Business Appreciation Week

The Commonwealth of Virginia will celebrate Business Appreciation Week May 13- 17, 2002.

On December 3, 2001, Novozymes Biologicals, Inc., the market leader in the development and production of naturally occurring microorganisms for industrial, consumer and agriculture uses, announced that it had chosen the Roanoke County Center for Research & Technology for the relocation and expansion of its local research and manufacturing operation. The move will save 65 jobs and create 25 new ones. Novozymes plans to invest $12 million within the next five years. Novozymes Biologicals, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Denmark based Novozymes A/S, the world leader in enzyme production and development for industrial applications.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new facility was held on March 14, 2002, at 2:00 p.m.

Bob Cook is the new President and CEO of Medeco Security Lock in West County. Mr. Cook moved to the Roanoke Valley in late January and replaces Bernd-D. Wempen who returned to Germany. Please join us in welcoming Bob Cook to the Roanoke County existing business community.

New Century Venture Center Update

National Business Incubation Association Mentor Program -  The National Business Incubation Association with financial support form the Appalachian Regional Commission has developed a grant program to bring together new incubator project leaders with seasoned program manager. Lisa Ison, president of the New Century Venture Center, has been selected to serve as a mentor to Appalachian communities interested in developing business incubators.

The New Century Venture Center has two seminars available in March and April. To register, please call 344-6402.

Virginia Department of Business Assistance Newsletter

If you wish to access the Virginia Department of Business Newsletter, it is available on their website at http://www.dba.state.va.us/mediacenter/newsletters.asp. The monthly newsletter is available on-line with an archive capability to view past newsletters beginning with June 2000. Newsletter topics cover small business, financing, to environmental issues. The newsletter requires the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (5.0) to view the newsletter as a PDF. The Roanoke Plant of Koppers’ Industries won the following corporate Safety Health & Environment Awards: Directors Award of Safety Excellence (2nd time) 190,000 man hours without an accident Environmental Compliance Award (2nd time) Bootstrap Safety Award (3rd time) Environmental Stewardship cash award for plant Waste Minimization program - the cash award of $2,500 was donated to the Glenvar High School.

In addition, the Roanoke Plant had the first company Storm Water Inspection by the EPA-Region 5 and VA Dept. of Environmental Quality – there were no corrective actions.

Synchrony

Synchrony, a technology company providing advanced controls, automation, and information systems, was selected by the Air Force for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award to develop magnetic bearings for advanced propulsion engines to be used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The value of the award is approximately $750,000.

The research program includes the development of intelligent distributed amplifiers, embedded processors, high temperature actuators, advanced control algorithms, and fault tolerant architectures. A prototype system will be demonstrated at Synchrony, followed by testing at Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce is a leading manufacturer of gas turbine engines for military and commercial applications.

DISTRICT BREAKFASTS

The purpose of the District Breakfasts is to contact all the business owners who participated in the 2001 Existing Business Survey and requested to be a part of redesigning the current program. These meetings focus on a myriad of topics which impact the Roanoke County Business Community. 
Economic Development staff encourages business owners to contact the department if you have business issues or problems of any nature and to include fire, robbery, flood, or threat of any nature.

Windsor Hills Magisterial District Breakfast - December 11, 2001

Topics covered in this session were problems finding quality workers, trade-offs made to live in the Roanoke Valley, dual taxes, rate of business license fees, problems faced by start-ups and small businesses, financial resources for small businesses, need for networking, and suggestion for a small group to simplify challenges faced by small businesses with business licenses.
